PTO Generators

ISC Sales offers Winco PTO generators for sale. Note: PTO stands for power-take-off. We’ll walk through what you need to know about PTO generators below.

What is a PTO Generator?

Power-take-off (PTO) generators are for utilizing the horsepower (HP) from a tractor engine and converting it into electric power for other uses. The most common example is for temporary power to farm equipment or home appliances during a power outage. When power companies look to restore power after an outage, they typically restore dense populations first, namely neighborhoods in the city. This leaves farms and rural communities waiting days for electrical power to be restored.

The duties on an agricultural farm cannot wait and having a PTO generator allows a farmer to continue running electric power to their equipment or home. PTO generators convert the energy from the tractor’s output shaft and turn it into electricity.

Advantages of a PTO Generator

Engine

When you buy a standby or portable generator, a large part of the purchase is the cost of the engine that runs the generator to produce power. When you use a PTO generator, you are using the tractor’s engine. Engines can sometimes be finicky and in the case of a PTO generator you rely on a more powerful engine from your tractor rather than what is typically a smaller, less powerful engine on a generator.

Generators that are left idle for a long period of time can have difficulty starting up. Farmhands use tractors on a regular basis. Because of that, you don’t have to worry about additional issues starting a generator engine or maintaining it.

Capacity

Because you are not buying a generator with an engine, you can get more kilowatt power for your dollar spent. PTO generators are able to pack a lot more power from a tractor engine than other generators with running watts ranging from 69,000 all the way up to 120,000 watts. If you don’t need that much power, then your cost will be a lot lower than a comparable portable generator carrying the same or a similar amount of wattage.

PTO Generators work for all kinds of tractors from sub compact to 400 kW horsepower tractors. It is a cost-effective and more efficient way to provide backup power.

Pick the Right Winco PTO Generator

Horsepower

You will want to match the PTO generator watts to the tractor’s horsepower engine capacity. That is the maximum amount of power you can run from your tractor’s engine. To understand the conversion of PTO to tractor power, the rule of thumb is 500 watts per 1 HP. So, if you have a smaller compact tractor that has a 25 HP engine you can produce up to 12,500 watts of power with an equivalent generator.

Rotations Per Minute (RPM)

Most new tractors operate at two different speeds: 540 or 1000 RPM. If you have an older tractor you will want a generator that works with the speed yours has.

Single or Three-Phase Electricity

PTO generators produce both single-phase and three-phase electricity. A single-phase is for standard home appliances and three-phase is for high powered needs with potentially 208 or 480 volts. What kind of power you’ll need is dependent on the type of tools, appliances and applications you will be sending power to. If you are in need of power for hand-held equipment, single-phase generators should provide sufficient energy. An example might be if you are using tools and a circular saw or miter saw to repair a fence at a remote location. For those farms with larger applications, you will want to invest in a three-phase generator.
